    Expeditionary Learning Program

Mt. Washington School’s EL Education program offers students opportunities to master skills and knowledge through a real-world curriculum that focuses on rigorous project-based learning experiences, fieldwork and case studies. The EL Education Classroom Curriculum incorporates centers of discovery, inquiry, critical-thinking and collaboration where students take ownership and responsibility for their learning. Combined with our robust early literacy program and comprehensive math curriculum, this allows students to achieve their full potential.

Mt. Washington School is committed to the holistic development of every child. Our EL Education program further develops our students as future leaders. Through the EL Education habits of learning and our social emotional program, students utilize quality, thoughtfulness, teamwork, responsibility and perseverance to become engaged learners. As students participate in expeditions, they are connecting with their communities through service learning and contributing to an ever-changing world.

Mt. Washington students are not bound to learning academic concepts in the classroom but apply discovery, inquiry, critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration to real world situations. We believe that students learn best by doing, creating, exploring and working together.

EL Education was born through a collaboration of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Outward Bound USA. This research-based program is guided by the core practices of:

    • Curriculum
    • Instruction
    • Assessment
    • Culture and Character
    • Leadership

    Community Learning Center

For our schools to transform, our communities must be revitalized. For our communities to revitalize, our schools must be transformed. They are dependent on each other and Community Learning Centers are the link.

Schools and the communities they serve are closely linked. Seldom does one succeed without the success of the other. That's why our Community Learning Centers support student achievement, enrich and revitalize communities and maximize the community's return on their financial investment.

Mt. Washington School is very proud to be a Community Learning Center and a neighborhood anchor. We strive to go beyond academics to focus on the whole child by serving as a hub for community services that are available to all students, their families and the entire community. We are able to offer a variety of services thanks to the collaboration and support of our many partners, our Resource Coordinator Ilene Hayes, and the committed community of Mt. Washington.

    Our Mission and Vision

Our students are top priority. We are passionately committed to their academic, social, emotional and physical growth. At Mt. Washington School, we work to redefine what is possible for our students and provide learning experiences that promote the full potential of our students.

We embrace the Community Learning Center philosophy which engages, educates and supports our students, their families and our community.

We build relationships, secure resources, engage partners and collaborate to achieve our goals. We create individualized learning experiences and a web of support to address the distinct needs of each student and their family. We support them throughout their lifelong journey.

We utilize data, embrace a unified plan, work as teams and share accountability. We encourage innovation. We create a rigorous academic and extra-curricular experience, a positive school culture and safe surroundings to exceed academic excellence. We encourage all to pursue continued growth through training, education and professional development.

We open our doors and are responsive to the Mt. Washington community, Cincinnati Public Schools and others impacted by our actions. We proactively reinvent ourselves to meet new challenges and expectations in an ever-changing environment.

With a clear and consistent commitment to these principles, we will be a preferred destination of learning and inspiration, as well as the heart of our community. At Mt. Washington School, anything and everything is possible!
